What Should I Learn First When Starting with Flutter?

I want to start building apps with Flutter, but I'm not sure what learning order makes the most sense. Should I begin with Dart fundamentals, then move on to widgets, layouts, state management, APIs, databases, and Git? I'd like to learn by building a project, but I'm worried about taking on too much at once and getting overwhelmed. What would be a practical beginner-friendly path?

Choose a small project you actually want to make, then use it as a guide rather than trying to study every Flutter topic upfront. Build one screen, add navigation, make a simple form, and store some local data. Learn each new concept only when the project needs it. Keeping the first version small will make it easier to stay motivated and avoid getting buried in theory.

A reasonable progression is: Dart fundamentals, Flutter widgets and layout, navigation and user input, basic state management, debugging and Git, then networking and databases. You can use Git from the beginning, but you don’t need advanced branching workflows yet. Focus on understanding the fundamentals and finishing tiny features before adding more tools.

Start with the basics of Dart first. You don’t need to master the entire language, but you should understand variables, functions, classes, collections, null safety, and asynchronous code. After that, learn Flutter widgets and layouts by making small, imperfect screens that don’t need to do anything yet. Once you’re comfortable building a basic interface, state management will be much easier to understand. Save APIs and databases for later so you’re learning concepts instead of just copying code.

That makes sense. I want to build an app while learning, but I’m very new and can get overwhelmed quickly. I’ll try breaking it into smaller pieces instead of tackling everything at once.
