What Should I Learn Now to Prepare for a Software Internship?

I'm currently in my fourth semester of Computer Engineering and feel unsure about what to focus on to improve my chances of getting an internship in my third year. So far, I've mainly been practicing problems on LeetCode. I've also built a basic CRUD blog application with React and a weather app in Flutter, but I'm not sure how to move beyond beginner projects or understand the structure of larger open-source repositories. What should I prioritize learning and building over the next year?

LeetCode is a useful starting point, but interviews usually include questions about projects, development practices, and the technologies youโ€™ve used. Choose a stack that appears often in internship listings near you and build one or two slightly more complete applications with it. Focus on clean code, authentication, databases, testing, deployment, and writing a good README rather than collecting lots of small projects. For open source, begin with smaller repositories and look for issues marked โ€œgood first issue.โ€ Read the CONTRIBUTING file, inspect the projectโ€™s README and folder structure, then trace one feature from its entry point through the code. You donโ€™t need to understand an entire large codebase before making a small documentation fix or bug fix.

MellowKite47: Iโ€™ve already made a React CRUD blog and a Flutter weather app, but larger projects still feel overwhelming. Iโ€™ll try starting with smaller repositories and tracing individual features instead of attempting to understand everything at once.

Make Git and version control part of your core preparation. Learn branching, pull requests, resolving merge conflicts, rebasing, reviewing changes, and keeping useful commit history. These skills will make contributing to open source much easier and are expected in most development teams. Alongside that, strengthen one language, learn common data structures and algorithms, and keep building practical projects that you can explain clearly during interviews.
