What should I learn to build a logistics app for a small company?

I work at a small company with only a few employees, and our logistics processes are fairly disorganized. I'm wondering whether it's realistic for a complete beginner to create an app to help manage them. How difficult would this be, what should I learn first, and would a mobile app even be the best solution?

An AI coding assistant can help a disciplined beginner create a prototype and explain development tools or deployment steps. Ask it to work feature by feature, and clearly tell it not to change anything when youโ€™re only asking for an explanation. However, the result may still be unreliable or insecure, so youโ€™ll need enough programming knowledge to test, review, and maintain what it produces.

If you decide to build it yourself, begin with basic programming and then choose one platform. For mobile development, that might mean Kotlin for Android, Swift for iPhone, or JavaScript with a cross-platform framework. Youโ€™ll also need databases, user authentication, application design, debugging, Git, deployment, and basic data structures and algorithms. Build one small feature at a time rather than trying to create the entire system at once.

There are many possible approaches, and the right one depends on what you mean by โ€œapp.โ€ It could be a mobile app, a website, a desktop tool, or even an automated spreadsheet. Youโ€™ll also need to consider where the data will be stored, who can access it, and how the company will host and maintain the system.

Before learning to build an app, make sure an app is actually the simplest solution. For a small team, start by mapping the current process and trying a spreadsheet or an existing inventory/logistics tool. Spreadsheets are inexpensive and easy to change when you discover that the workflow needs adjusting, while custom software takes much longer to modify and maintain.

Software used by a real company needs to be dependable, secure, and maintainable. Without knowing the exact workflow, itโ€™s difficult to estimate, but building a proper system generally requires substantial programming knowledgeโ€”roughly the foundation you might gain through a computer science degree, whether learned formally or independently. AI tools can help, but they work much better when you already understand the code and can judge whether their output is safe and correct.
