What should I prioritize when building a gaming PC for a 4K TV?

I have a 4K TCL television and want to get into PC gaming, but I currently don't have room for a separate desk, monitor, and chair setup. I'm considering building a PC that I can use from the couch and connect directly to the TV. It would mainly be for gaming, with possible emulation of older PlayStation 2 titles that aren't available on current console stores. I'm in the United States and don't have a strict budget—I'm mainly looking for the best value rather than spending blindly. I'm also open to upgrading the TV if that would make a meaningful difference. Which components are worth spending more on, and where would it be reasonable to save money?

This setup is definitely workable. A long HDMI cable lets you keep the computer wherever it has the best airflow instead of placing it right beside the TV. From the couch, a controller handles most games well, and a small side table at armrest height can hold a mouse, keyboard, remotes, and gamepads. Check whether the TV has a Game Mode or another low-latency setting, since reducing input lag makes a big difference.

The right parts depend heavily on the TV’s refresh rate and the games you want to play. For a standard 4K 60 Hz television, a solid midrange gaming system can provide a good experience, while a 4K high-refresh TV would justify a more powerful graphics card. Look for a model with low input lag, variable refresh rate support, and a useful Game Mode before upgrading the display. Older-console emulation is generally much easier to run than modern 4K PC games, though the emulator and game should be configured legally and appropriately.

Be careful about putting a powerful PC inside a closed TV stand. Gaming hardware produces a lot of heat, and restricted airflow can lead to high temperatures, noise, and reduced performance. An attractive case placed openly beside the stand would be much safer. If you want strong 4K gaming performance, prioritize the graphics card first, then make sure the power supply and cooling are reliable. You can save more on appearance-focused parts and avoid overspending on the motherboard or extreme memory speeds.

Keeping it beside the TV should work. I have room for the computer itself; I just don’t have space for a second desk, chair, monitor, and complete workstation.
