What should I try first after switching from Windows to Linux?

I recently replaced Windows with Omarchy and am still getting comfortable with Hyprland and its keyboard shortcuts. The system feels noticeably faster, and I'm enjoying the ready-made setup, but I suspect I'm only using a small part of what Linux offers. What open-source tools, workflows, or everyday quality-of-life improvements made Linux really click for you? I'd also appreciate advice on beginner mistakes to avoid, and whether I should start learning the underlying Arch-based system now or simply use the preconfigured environment for a while.

The main beginner trap is blindly pasting terminal commands from tutorials. Read each command, check what it changes, and keep backups before modifying system configuration. Since Omarchy is already configured for you, enjoy it for now and investigate the underlying pieces when something breaks or when you want to customize them.

A privacy-focused browser is a worthwhile early install, especially if you’re coming from a default Windows setup. Beyond that, keep exploring normally and learn the Arch basics gradually. You don’t need to understand every package-management detail before getting productive, but knowing what commands do will save you trouble later.

The best first step is simply using the computer for things you actually care about. Install Steam if you play games, development tools if you code, and customize the desktop only when you have a reason to change something. Linux doesn’t have one required progression, so let your needs guide you instead of trying to learn everything at once.
