What Should I Upgrade After Buying an RTX 5070 Ti?

I recently bought an RTX 5070 Ti after my previous graphics card failed. The card is much more powerful than the rest of my current setup, so I'd like to upgrade one component at a time rather than replace everything at once. I'm currently using an Intel Core i7-12700KF with an MSI 1080p 280Hz curved monitor. Should I upgrade the monitor or CPU first, and what would be the best cost-to-performance choice for getting more out of the graphics card? I mainly play games, often with ray tracing enabled, but I also use the system for work and some AI-related tasks. Budget isn't a major limitation, although I'd still prefer good value.

Before making the next purchase, check whether returning the 5070 Ti makes sense in your market. A cheaper competing card may offer similar raster performance and better value, but the Nvidia card is the more sensible choice if ray tracing, AI workloads, CUDA support, or other Nvidia-specific features matter to you. If you keep the 5070 Ti, Iโ€™d still choose the monitor before replacing the CPU.

A 1440p OLED monitor would be the premium choice, but OLED isnโ€™t essential if the price difference is huge where you live. A good high-refresh IPS monitor can still provide excellent value. The main limitation right now is that 1080p prevents you from seeing much of what the new GPU can deliver.

MellowCedar42: OLED models here cost several times more than similar non-OLED displays. Is the image-quality difference really worth paying that much?

Upgrade the monitor first. A 27-inch 1440p display would be a much better match for the 5070 Ti, especially if you play competitive games. If you mostly play single-player titles, a 32-inch 4K display would let you take better advantage of the card. Your 12700KF is still a strong gaming CPU and shouldnโ€™t be the first upgrade.

You could also consider a 4K 120Hz or 144Hz HDR monitor, or even a large high-refresh HDR television if you prefer immersive single-player gaming. The 5070 Ti is capable of handling 4K well, though you may still use upscaling or frame generation in demanding ray-traced games.
