My current gaming PC is starting to show its age in newer games, and I'm trying to figure out the best upgrade path. I usually play at 1440p and want better performance without needing maximum settings or a completely new system. I was considering replacing my RTX 2080 SUPER because its 8 GB of VRAM may become limiting, but I'm unsure whether the Ryzen 9 3950X or any other component will hold back a newer graphics card.
The system has a Ryzen 9 3950X, NZXT Kraken Z73 cooler, Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus Wi-Fi motherboard, 32 GB of DDR4-3600 memory, a 1 TB Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD, an EVGA RTX 2080 SUPER, and a 1000 W Seasonic Prime Gold power supply. Which component should I upgrade first, and what graphics card or AM4 processor would make the most sense?

The graphics card is the best place to start for 1440p gaming. Your 3950X, 32 GB of RAM, and 1000 W power supply can support a much faster GPU. An RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti would be a substantial step up, though the right choice depends on your budget, refresh rate, and the games you play.
Any compatible Ryzen 5000 processor would improve gaming performance, but an X3D model is the one worth considering. I’d upgrade the GPU first and then check whether you’re actually CPU-limited before replacing the 3950X. Your memory capacity is still fine, and the SATA SSD mainly affects loading times rather than frame rates.
A used RTX 3080 Ti or a comparable AMD card is another reasonable performance target if you find one at a good price. Also inspect the age and condition of the liquid cooler before planning several more years of use. The power supply is more than capable, so it shouldn’t need replacement for a normal GPU upgrade.

I usually play at 1440p, so a GPU upgrade sounds like the safest first step. I’m mainly trying to figure out which current card offers the best value.
