I live in the Netherlands and have a flexible budget, ideally around €500. My current PC runs Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant reasonably well, but I would like smoother performance and higher frame rates. The system has an ASRock A320M-HDV R3.0 motherboard, Ryzen 5 2400G, Radeon RX 580, 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, a 240GB SSD, and a 1TB Toshiba P300 hard drive. What would be the best upgrade path? I am especially interested in knowing whether I should replace the CPU, GPU, or both, and whether I need to check BIOS or power-supply compatibility.

A Ryzen 5 5600 is probably the best price-to-performance option here. Avoid the older Ryzen 5 5500 if the price is close, and do not assume a model with integrated graphics is better for this build since you already have a dedicated GPU. If you want to spend more, a Ryzen 7 5700X3D-class chip could improve CPU-limited gaming, but the extra cost may be difficult to justify unless you plan to keep the platform for a while.
Make sure your games are installed on the SSD rather than the Toshiba hard drive. That will not usually raise average FPS, but it can improve loading times and reduce some stutter. Also verify that the 240GB drive really is an SSD; the model information suggests it is likely a SATA SSD even if a monitoring program labels it incorrectly.
Start with the processor. CS2 can be held back by the Ryzen 5 2400G, particularly because of its older architecture and limited cache. A Ryzen 5 5600, 5600X, or 5600XT would be a strong value upgrade for this motherboard, provided the BIOS supports Ryzen 5000. After that, put whatever remains of the budget toward a graphics card. Your RX 580 is still usable for esports games, so the CPU upgrade may make the biggest difference first.
I was considering the Ryzen 5 5600 because it is fairly inexpensive. Would that be a sensible choice for this system?
You can also upgrade both parts: choose a Ryzen 5 5600 for roughly €100–€130, then use the remaining budget on a newer mid-range GPU such as an RX 9060 XT or a similar card. An 8GB model should work for esports titles, while 16GB gives you more room for newer games. Check your power supply, case clearance, and motherboard BIOS before buying anything.
The more expensive chip is only worth it if the price difference is small and you are targeting very high refresh rates. For normal 1080p gaming, the 5600 should already be a substantial improvement.
