What to Do After Spilling Soda on My Laptop?

I just spilled a significant amount of ginger ale on my ASUS ROG G16 2023 laptop. I quickly unplugged everything, flipped it over, shook it out, powered it off, and dried as much as I could with towels. Right now, it's sitting upside down in a V shape with a fan blowing on it. I'm aware there's a risk that some of the soda may have reached the internal components like the motherboard. How long should I wait before I try to disassemble it and clean the motherboard? I'm feeling a bit intimidated by the disassembly process, even though I have a detailed guide for my model. I really don't want to pay a lot for professional help, but I'm also worried about potentially damaging the laptop if I attempt it myself.

It's worth considering the cost of cleaning versus replacing your $1300 laptop. Most shops give free quotes, so calling around might help even if you're worried about waiting too long.

That's a solid point! But the local repair shops are closed right now, and I fear waiting will just make it worse. I'll see if I can disassemble it myself first.

I managed to disassemble my laptop without too much hassle. Turned out, the only affected area was the very edge of an air intake, and everything else was clean! So, better to check than to regret it later.

Oh wow, good to hear! I guess I might be more worried than I need to be. Glad it worked out for you!

You should definitely unplug the battery and start cleaning it as soon as possible! Soda can leave behind a sticky residue when it dries. I recommend using Q-tips and some high-concentration isopropyl alcohol for the cleaning.

Totally agree! If you can, try to find those synthetic Q-tips instead of the cotton ones; they might hold up better. Time really is crucial here, though!
