What tools and extras do I need to assemble a PC?

Aside from a screwdriver and a clear workspace, are there any other tools or supplies I should have ready for a first PC build? I'm especially wondering whether an antistatic wrist strap is worth buying, along with anything useful for cable management, installing small screws, or preparing the case.

You can build most PCs with a Phillips screwdriver, the motherboard box as a safe work surface, and something to hold the screws. Velcro straps are convenient for cable management and are easier to remove than zip ties. If you use zip ties, flush cutters are much safer and less awkward than scissors.

A few optional tools can make the process much easier: a movable desk lamp, a magnetic-tip precision screwdriver, a small tray for screws, and long tweezers or a magnetic pickup tool for anything that gets dropped inside the case. Some cases also require a nut driver to install or adjust motherboard standoffs.

Before installing everything in the case, it can be useful to test the motherboard, processor, cooler, memory, power supply, and graphics card outside the case if needed. Check that the correct standoffs and I/O shield are in place, and have USB drives ready for the operating system and possibly a BIOS update. Following a reputable step-by-step build guide is more valuable than buying lots of specialized equipment.

An antistatic wrist strap isn’t strictly required, but it’s inexpensive insurance if it makes you more comfortable. Otherwise, build on a hard surface rather than carpet, touch an unpainted metal part of the case regularly, and avoid handling component contacts or connectors. The important thing is preventing static buildup, not obsessing over the strap itself.

Grounding yourself before starting and occasionally afterward is usually enough for a normal home build, especially if the room and clothing aren’t generating much static.
