My PC has started freezing completely while the audio loops or stutters, sometimes followed by an automatic restart. I'm wondering whether my older GTX 1660 Ti with 2GB of VRAM may be failing, although I haven't overclocked it. My system also has an Intel Core i7-8700K, 16GB of 2133MHz RAM, and plenty of SSD storage. Virus scans and removing unnecessary programs haven't helped, and I'm considering trying a system restore before replacing hardware. If the GPU is the problem, what would be a good replacement for 1080p gaming at around 60 FPS? I'd prefer at least 8GB of VRAM and would like to keep the cost around $400 or less.

A used RTX 3060 or RX 6600-class card should handle 1080p at 60 FPS comfortably and generally offers 8GB or more. An older GTX 1080 Ti can also do the job, but age, power consumption, and the condition of used cards make it harder to recommend unless it’s very inexpensive.
Before buying anything, monitor GPU temperature, GPU load, VRAM usage, CPU load, and power readings with a hardware monitor or an in-game overlay. A full freeze with looping audio can come from the GPU, CPU, RAM, power supply, drivers, or overheating, so it’s worth confirming the failing component first. Also check the power supply model and condition.
For a cost-effective 1080p card, a used RTX 4060, used RX 6600/6650 XT, or a similar current midrange card would make sense. The RX 6600 is usually enough for 60 FPS at 1080p, while the RTX 4060 gives you newer features and better efficiency. Prices vary a lot, so compare local new and used options rather than choosing solely by VRAM.
If you want a newer card and can find one near your budget, an RTX 5050/5060 or an 8GB card from the current AMD lineup could work well for this target. Just don’t assume the GPU is definitely responsible until you test with updated drivers, a clean driver installation, memory testing, temperature monitoring, and another known-good power supply if possible.
The RAM is also quite slow for that platform. Replacing the 2133MHz kit with compatible DDR4-3200 memory could improve overall performance, although it probably won’t explain the freezing by itself. The i7-8700K is still usable for 60 FPS gaming, but check CPU temperatures and whether the audio stutter happens even when the GPU is lightly loaded.
