What’s a legal way to deter or recover stolen potted plants?

I recently rented my first house and planted two yucca cuttings in pots outside. One was stolen while I was at work, so I'm looking for a way to protect the remaining plants or identify who takes them. I considered hiding a GPS or Bluetooth tracker in the soil, but I'd need it to survive moisture and ideally avoid alerting the person carrying it. Are there practical options, such as cameras, alarms, or non-covert trackers, that would work for this situation?

Rather than hiding a tracker, consider securing the pots with a cable, using heavier planters, or adding a motion alarm. Those measures can make a quick theft much harder without creating privacy or notification issues.

I’m planning to add cameras, but I was worried that someone wearing a mask at night might still be impossible to identify. I’ll probably combine better lighting and physical security with the camera instead of relying only on a hidden tracker.

That combination makes sense. A camera can still document clothing, direction of travel, and a vehicle, while lighting and a secured pot may prevent the theft altogether.

Bluetooth tags such as Tile can help with locating an item, but they depend on nearby phones and may not provide reliable live GPS tracking. Their alert behavior and range also vary, so they’re better for finding misplaced belongings than for secretly tracking a stolen plant.

A weatherproof security camera aimed at the entrance or plant area is probably the most practical option. Motion-activated lighting and a visible camera may deter theft, while recorded footage can help identify someone even if a tracker is unreliable. Make sure the camera placement follows local privacy rules.
