I'm a 17-year-old girl living in Afghanistan, where formal education for girls is currently unavailable, so I'm studying online independently. About a year ago I began Harvard's CS50 but stopped because I lacked basic computer experience at the time. I've since started a 100-day Python course and am currently on Day 21. The exercises have been manageable, and I'm also studying a general IT fundamentals course.
What should I focus on next to build a realistic path toward freelance work or future job opportunities, especially if I'm eventually able to relocate to the UK or another European country? Should I deepen my Python skills, learn web development, explore data or cybersecurity, or focus on IT support? I'd also appreciate advice on building a portfolio, choosing useful courses, and finding initial work while continuing to learn.

For freelance work, web development may be the most direct route. After Python, learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, then consider a framework such as React. You can create a portfolio without formal credentials by building useful, complete projects—personal websites, small business sites, dashboards, or simple web applications. A structured project-based curriculum such as The Odin Project could help you progress without collecting too many disconnected courses.
A practical plan would be: finish the Python course, learn Git and basic command-line skills, build two or three Python projects, then decide whether you enjoy web development enough to add JavaScript and frontend skills. If you later pursue work abroad, employers will usually care about demonstrable ability, communication, reliability, and any real experience you can gain. Don’t feel pressured to choose a permanent specialty now—your direction can change as you gain experience.
Keep CS fundamentals in the mix if you can. Revisiting CS50 or another introductory course can help with problem-solving, data structures, and how computers work. At the same time, prioritize actually building things and publish your code in a GitHub repository with clear readme files, screenshots, and explanations of what you learned. A few finished projects are more convincing than a long list of certificates.
