What’s the Best Affordable Mini PC for Linux and Emulation?

With prices going up due to inflation and scalpers, I'm on the lookout for compact computers that can efficiently run a Linux desktop and handle some emulation, gaming, and light tasks. I've been using a Raspberry Pi for a NAS setup, so I'd prefer not to buy another one, especially with the current inflation. What options should I consider, and what should I keep in mind when making my choice?

You might want to consider buying something like an OptiPlex or ThinkCenter Tiny. They offer better I/O and more robust drive support than single-board computers, and since they're x86, you'll have access to a wider range of Linux software.

I snagged a couple of second-hand PCs from around 2018-2020 for about $50 each with Intel i5 processors. I installed a lightweight Linux distro like MX Linux on one for basic tasks, and it runs smoothly. You might need a low-cost GPU for gaming, but it’s really great for productivity and light gaming!

Where did you find those second-hand PCs? They sound like a good deal.

Consider checking out some lower-end dedicated gaming devices too. I own a Powkiddy RGB30, which costs around $65. It’s mainly an emulator but can handle simple computing tasks and comes with built-in controls and a decent screen.

What exact games are you looking to emulate? That’ll help narrow down your options since you can emulate simpler systems on lower-spec devices. I recommend checking out YouTube channels like ETA Prime or Retro Game Corps—they provide solid reviews on mini PCs and emulators.

Raspberry Pis can be pricey these days. I suggest looking into alternatives like Banana Pi or Orange Pi; they’ve got some solid options out there.

Could you recommend specific models from those brands?
