I have an older PC running an i5-6600k paired with an ASRock Z170 Extreme4 motherboard. I'm curious about which CPU would be the best upgrade for the LGA1151 socket. I've heard discussions about using some i9 CPUs, but I thought the i7-7700k was the top choice. Can anyone confirm this?

If you're using an LGA 1151 v1 motherboard like yours, the best choice would definitely be the i7-7700K. However, if you have a v2 board, you might consider the i9-9900KS. Just keep in mind that any performance boost might not be super significant, plus the top CPUs often come with a higher price tag on the used market.

Thanks for clarifying that! I appreciate it. Seeing the i9 options out there had me confused.

For the LGA 1151 socket, the i7-7700K is your go-to if you're on the 100-200 series chipsets. I have the i9-9900K, which is good too, but remember that the 7700K is still popular for a reason. Just depends on the upgrade you’re looking for.

Yeah, for LGA 1151 v1, you’re looking at the i7-7700K as the best option. Just a heads up though, it's actually a bit slower compared to some newer CPUs like the i3-12100f, so don't expect massive upgrades in performance.

Good to know! I guess I should manage my expectations on the performance front.
