What’s the best CPU upgrade for my B450M Pro4 without replacing my RAM?

I currently have an ASRock B450M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 motherboard, a Ryzen 5 2600, a GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade the processor as far as this motherboard reasonably allows while keeping the board and memory. I've been considering CPUs such as the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 5 5500X3D. What processors are compatible, and which would make the most sense for my current system?

The Ryzen 5 5800X3D is technically the strongest gaming CPU for AM4, but it can be difficult to justify if it costs substantially more than the alternatives. The 5500X3D is a strong gaming-focused upgrade and can be a better value, especially if it is cheaper in your region. Check that your motherboard has the required BIOS support before upgrading.

With a GTX 1060, an X3D chip probably won’t provide much benefit right now because the graphics card will usually be the limiting factor. A Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X would still be a major improvement over the Ryzen 5 2600 and may be all you need unless you plan to install a much faster GPU later.

For a sensible upgrade path, consider a 5500X3D or 5600X now, then add another 16GB of matching RAM if your games or applications need it. The 5800X3D is the platform’s top gaming option, but its premium may be better spent on a graphics-card upgrade, since the GTX 1060 will be the main performance limit in most modern games.

The 5500X3D can make sense if you find it for less than a 5600 or 5600X. Its extra cache helps in CPU-limited games and can improve frame-time consistency, particularly in games such as Rust.
