What’s the Best Database or API for U.S. Grocery Products?

I'm looking for a reliable database or API covering grocery products sold in the United States. Ideally, it would include product names, brands, categories, UPCs or GTINs, accurate retail package sizes, product images, and a large, clean catalog. Commercial use, API access, or downloadable data would all work. I tried using USDA FoodData Central through Supabase, but it doesn't seem well suited to a consumer-facing grocery catalog. What services or datasets would you recommend?

For a more polished commercial data source, look into Syndigo. It’s designed around grocery and retail product content and is likely a better fit for accurate packaging details, images, and standardized catalog data, although it’s a paid enterprise service. There are also open GTIN-related projects and datasets that can help supplement a commercial provider.

Open Food Facts can work well for prototyping, but the quality varies significantly from one product to another. Some entries have detailed nutrition, packaging, and images, while others contain little more than a barcode and name. I wouldn’t treat it as a fully reliable commercial master catalog without additional validation.

For a side project, Open Food Facts is probably the easiest place to start because the data is free and generally allows commercial use. Just expect inconsistent coverage and incomplete fields, especially for U.S. products. You’ll likely need a cleanup and normalization layer before using it in a production catalog.
