I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600 with a PowerColor Red Devil RX 7800 XT. Most games perform well, but Control Resonant has frequent drops to around 20 FPS even when I change the graphics settings, so I suspect the CPU may be holding the system back. I'm considering a Ryzen 7 5800X3D because it should work in my existing AM4 motherboard without replacing the rest of the platform. Is that the best upgrade for roughly $350, or is there a better alternative?

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is probably the best gaming upgrade for your current AM4 platform. It should outperform the other compatible Ryzen 5000 options in most games and would let you keep your motherboard and memory. If you can find one near your budget, it’s a strong choice.
I’d still investigate the unusually severe frame drops before buying anything. Check whether the game is installed on an SSD, confirm how much RAM you have and whether it’s running in dual-channel mode, and update the BIOS, chipset drivers, and GPU drivers. A 5800X3D is a good upgrade, but it may not fix an underlying storage, memory, or software problem.
