What’s the best gaming upgrade from a Ryzen 9 3900X and RTX 3080?

My current PC has a Ryzen 9 3900X, an RTX 3080, 32GB of DDR4 running at 2133 MT/s, and roughly 3TB of storage spread across four SSDs. Some CPU-heavy games, including simulation titles, are giving me lower FPS than expected, and I'm trying to figure out whether the processor is the main bottleneck. Should I upgrade the CPU, improve the memory speed first, or replace other components as well?

A new platform such as a modern Intel or AM5 system can be faster for both gaming and productivity, but it would require a new motherboard and likely new memory. Since you already have an X570 board, a 5800X3D-class drop-in upgrade is usually the better value unless you also need a major boost in non-gaming workloads.

Before replacing the CPU, check why the memory is running at 2133 MT/s. That is usually the default speed, and your kit may support a higher rated speed through the motherboard’s XMP or DOCP setting. DDR4-2933 to DDR4-3600 is a more typical range for Ryzen, and improving it could noticeably help minimum FPS in CPU- and memory-sensitive games. Test stability after changing the setting rather than assuming the overclock worked.

For a gaming-focused upgrade while keeping the same motherboard and DDR4 memory, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the strongest straightforward choice. A 5700X3D is also worth considering if it is substantially cheaper. Check your BIOS version and update it before installing a Ryzen 5000-series CPU. Your X570 Aorus Elite should support these processors with the appropriate BIOS.
MellowCedar47: I’m using an X570 Aorus Elite, so I’ll check its BIOS support before buying anything.

The 3900X is still a capable processor, so the best upgrade depends on your actual frame-time data. Monitor GPU usage, individual CPU-core usage, RAM usage, and FPS while playing. If the GPU is well below full usage and one or more CPU threads are saturated, a 5800X3D or 5700X3D should help considerably. If the GPU is near 95–100% usage, a CPU upgrade probably will not change much at your current settings and resolution.

MellowCedar47: The 2133 figure came from Task Manager, so it may just be the default setting. I’ll look for the XMP or DOCP option and test the games again before upgrading.
