My current GPU is an AMD RX 580 2048SP, and I usually stick with budget cards until basic tasks and games become difficult. My previous card was a GeForce GT 1030, so I'm not chasing high-end performance—I mainly want roughly twice the performance of my current card for under $500 CAD.
The RTX 3050 caught my eye, but I'm not sure it offers enough of an improvement or represents good value. What low-end or midrange cards should I consider, and where are reliable places to buy them in Canada? I'm open to used or refurbished hardware if it offers significantly better performance.

I’d skip the RTX 3050 unless you find the 8GB version at a very low price, around $220–$250 CAD. The 6GB model is especially poor value and may not be much faster than your current card. A used RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, or RX 6700 XT would be a much more noticeable upgrade. If you find a legitimate RTX 3080 around $350–$500, that could be excellent value, assuming your power supply and case can handle it.
Your i5-9400 may limit some of these faster GPUs in CPU-heavy games, but upgrading from an RX 580 2048SP should still be very noticeable. The 2048SP version is already a cut-down RX 580, so almost any card in the RTX 3060 Ti/RX 6700 XT class or above should provide a substantial improvement. Make sure your power supply has enough capacity and the required PCIe power connectors.
Used cards are likely to give you the best performance per dollar. Look at local listings, reputable refurbished sellers, and Canadian retailers such as Memory Express for clearance deals. An RX 6700 XT, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, or RX 7600 could all make sense depending on the asking price. Test a used card if possible, check that it runs without artifacts, and confirm the seller has a return option.
The Intel Arc B580 is probably the strongest new option in this price range. It offers a large jump over an RX 580 and has 12GB of VRAM, but your system needs working Resizable BAR for Arc cards to perform properly. Check whether your motherboard and BIOS support it before buying. With an i5-9400, it should still be a reasonable pairing, although newer CPUs would let it stretch its legs more.
The RX 6700 XT is still a very good budget gaming card, especially at 1080p and entry-level 1440p. It generally offers a much bigger upgrade than the RTX 3050 and has 12GB of VRAM. An RX 6600 XT is another option if you find one around $200 CAD, though it is a smaller step up. Avoid paying close to $450 for an RX 7600 unless availability is unusually bad.
