I'm in the United States and want to build a powerful, cost-effective gaming PC for under $3,000, without peripherals. I'm mainly interested in raw performance, compatibility, and avoiding unnecessary premium features. I use Linux, so I don't need a large amount of memory for Windows, but I'd like DDR5 around 30–34 CAS latency, ideally 16GB or more. I also want a 1–2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD, AIO CPU cooling, and enough upgrade potential to keep the system relevant for several years. My goal is roughly 144–240 FPS at 1440p on high to maximum settings, along with solid VR performance. Games I play include Cyberpunk 2077, Counter-Strike 2, Elden Ring, Minecraft with heavy mods and shaders, No Man's Sky, Satisfactory, Kerbal Space Program, Garry's Mod, Subnautica, Roblox, Terraria, and several other lighter or moderately demanding titles.

If you’re near a Micro Center, check their CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundles first. They can offer very good value compared with buying those parts separately. A strong current configuration would be a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or 9800X3D, 32GB of DDR5, a suitable B850 motherboard, a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive, a Radeon RX 9070 XT, an 850W power supply, and a case and cooler you like. For an X3D processor, RAM timings are less important than having a reliable kit with the right capacity and speed.
The parts list you described should be achievable for well under $3,000, especially if you avoid paying extra for cosmetic features. A modern Ryzen X3D CPU paired with a high-end Radeon card would be a good fit for 1440p gaming and VR. I’d lean toward 32GB of DDR5 rather than 16GB for heavily modded Minecraft, simulation games, and future-proofing. Linux compatibility is generally good, but it’s still worth checking each game’s anti-cheat and Proton status before buying.
Your games should run well on Linux overall. The newer Subnautica title may be less predictable while it’s still in early access, since compatibility can change with updates, but that doesn’t necessarily reflect a problem with the hardware. A balanced build with a strong GPU, an X3D Ryzen processor, 32GB of RAM, and a quality 850W PSU should give you excellent 1440p results without wasting money on unnecessary premium components.
