I'm building a gaming PC for my mom's home, which is in the middle of a forest and powered by a generator. Because electricity and budget are limited, I need something efficient rather than extremely powerful. The main games would be League of Legends and Forza Horizon 6. I found a used Ryzen 3 3100 for about $20 and was considering pairing it with an RTX 3050 6GB. Another option is a Ryzen 5 5600GT now, then adding a dedicated graphics card later, but that would cost more overall. Which route makes the most sense for this situation?

A handheld gaming PC with a dock could be worth considering. These systems generally use much less power than a desktop, and the built-in battery gives you some backup when the generator isn’t running. With a monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected, it can work like a small desktop. League should run fine on most reasonably modern handhelds, though you’d want to check the performance of the specific model.
If you’re building a conventional desktop, a used Ryzen 5 5500 or Ryzen 5 3600 paired with an RX 6600 would usually be a better gaming combination than a Ryzen 3 3100 and RTX 3050. The RX 6600 is considerably better value and performance in many markets, while the 3050 is often a weak buy.
Unfortunately, prices are very different where I live. A used RX 6600 costs around $300, while a used RTX 3050 is closer to $190, so the 3050 is much easier for me to afford.
Given the local prices, the RTX 3050 may be reasonable despite not being the best value in general. The Ryzen 3 3100 can handle League and should work with the card, but the Ryzen 5 5600GT gives you more CPU headroom and a better upgrade path. For the lowest initial cost, the 3100 and 3050 make sense; just make sure the power supply is reliable and efficient enough for generator use.
I hadn’t considered a handheld. If League runs well on one, that could actually be a practical option for this setup.
