What's the Best Order for Installing a CPU Cooler and Motherboard?

Most folks agree that it's usually easier to install the CPU cooler before attaching the motherboard. You won’t typically have issues with the PSU cables unless your case layout is really tight. If there's a concern, with a modular PSU, you can connect the CPU power cables before installing the motherboard and plug the other side in later.

There's no hard and fast rule here. I've done it both ways. Typically, I find it's less awkward to have the CPU cooler on my lap and then attach the motherboard. Your case size and layout can definitely impact what's easiest.

I always install the cooler after the motherboard as it fits better in tight cases, but I also do it before with some setups, especially if I’m dealing with a smaller case. Just make sure it doesn’t block your access to those PSU connections.

It really comes down to personal preference. I've installed my cooler after putting in the motherboard, and I found it worked just fine. If you’re new to building, putting the cooler on first might give you more room to work with.

For larger coolers, it's generally better to install them after the motherboard is in the case. It can be tricky fitting everything in with a big cooler already attached. Plus, routing power and fan cables is easier without the cooler in the way.
