I want to improve gaming performance without replacing my entire system. My current build has a Ryzen 5 3600, an Asus ROG Strix B450-F AM4 motherboard, an RTX 3070, and 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory. My goals are high-refresh-rate 1440p gaming at maximum settings and 4K 60 FPS gaming while streaming to my TV through Moonlight. Newer games are struggling even with DLSS and upscaling. I'm based in Europe and have roughly €1,000–€1,400 to spend, or about $1,100–$1,600. I'd prefer to keep the AM4 motherboard if possible and would like the best performance-per-euro upgrade.

Your budget puts you in an awkward middle ground: you could either make a relatively modest AM4 upgrade or get close to the cost of moving to AM5 with a new CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. Before buying anything, make sure the RAM is stable and preferably CL16, the RTX 3070 is performing normally, your power supply is good quality and at least around 650W, and that your cooling, storage, and case are adequate.
If those areas are fine, an AM4 CPU upgrade may be enough. A Ryzen 7 5800X3D paired with a solid B550 board should cost under roughly €500 and would remove much of the CPU limitation. Your RTX 3070 should manage 1440p at high refresh rates and 4K around 60 FPS with DLSS, although maximum settings may not always be realistic.
If you also want a newer GPU with more than 16GB of VRAM, a faster card such as a Radeon 9070 XT would provide a major boost, while a less expensive option could keep the total closer to budget. Just remember to include possible costs for a power supply, SSD, cooling, case, and other accessories. Used components can also offer good value if you can test them carefully.
For the simplest AM4-focused upgrade, look at a Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X3D and add another 16GB of matching DDR4 memory. If the budget allows, pairing the CPU and RAM upgrade with a Radeon 9070 XT would give you a much larger improvement for newer games, especially at 4K. Make sure your power supply can handle the new GPU.
That makes sense. I’m willing to replace the motherboard and CPU if those are really the only parts I need to change, but I’d still prefer to avoid a complete platform rebuild.
