What’s the best way to back up my PC to Google Drive before reinstalling Windows?

Don’t only copy the documents and pictures you immediately think of. Check application data, browser profiles, saved games, project folders, and any other directories containing settings you may need later. A complete backup is safer if you’re unsure what matters.

If you use the desktop app, be careful after reinstalling Windows. Download the backed-up files from the Google Drive website first, rather than immediately reconnecting an empty or partially configured sync folder. Otherwise, an accidental synchronization could change or remove files in the cloud. Also, consider whether a clean install is really necessary before wiping the system.

Keep in mind that uploading a large backup can take many hours or even days, depending on your upload speed and data limits. A few gigabytes should be manageable, but hundreds of gigabytes or a terabyte would be much faster with a USB 3 external drive. Google Drive also shouldn’t be your only copy of important files.

The simplest option is Google Drive for Desktop. Install it, choose the folders you want to back up, and let it upload them. You can also use a third-party tool such as Cyberduck or rclone, but those may require more setup. Before reinstalling Windows, verify that the files are actually visible in the web version of Google Drive.
