What’s the best way to build a gaming-capable PC for $750–$1,000?

I'm new to buying and building PCs and don't really know where to start. I tried using a parts-selection website, but I found it difficult to understand. I like the compact look of the Mac mini and would prefer something similarly small if possible, though I'm also open to a mid-size desktop. The computer would mainly be used for everyday tasks, but I'd also like to play games, which is why I'm considering a Windows PC instead of a Mac mini. My budget is approximately $750–$1,000. Should I build one myself, buy a prebuilt system, or consider a mini PC?

If you have a nearby computer retailer with a build-your-own section, it’s worth checking their current bundle deals and asking the staff for guidance. They may be able to help choose compatible parts or assemble the system for you. With component prices fluctuating, a prebuilt may currently offer better value than buying every part separately.

A beginner-friendly PC-building guide can make the process much less intimidating. Before choosing parts, decide which games you want to play, what resolution and frame rate you expect, and whether the budget includes the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and operating system. If picking individual parts still feels overwhelming, asking someone to create a complete parts list or choosing a reputable prebuilt is perfectly reasonable.

For a compact system, some mini PCs can handle everyday use and light to moderate gaming surprisingly well. Brands such as GMKtec have models with decent performance, but check the graphics capability carefully because many mini PCs use integrated graphics and won’t perform like a dedicated gaming desktop.
