I'm a sophomore starting to look for internships and improve my resume, but my technical background is pretty limited. I'm comfortable with basics like Excel and Word, and I'd like to learn Python, SQL, R, or other skills that employers commonly expect. How should I decide what to learn, and what's the best way to practice so I can demonstrate those skills on my resume?

For SQL, beginner-friendly interactive courses on relational databases are a solid starting point. For Python, an introductory computer science course with lectures and problem sets can give you more structure than simply watching short tutorials. Practice by writing code yourself, repeating the exercises, and building small programs rather than only following along.

The right skills depend heavily on your major and the type of internship you want. You don’t necessarily need several programming languages right away. For most beginner data or business-oriented roles, becoming useful with Excel, SQL, and Python may be more valuable than spreading yourself across Python, R, C++, and other languages. Check the job requirements and learn toward a specific target.

Start by looking at several internship descriptions you’re genuinely interested in. Make a list of the skills that appear repeatedly, then prioritize those instead of trying to learn every language at once. If Python and SQL show up often, learn the fundamentals and build a small project using both so you have something concrete to discuss during applications.

Online courses and free tutorials can work well, but choose one structured resource and finish it instead of jumping between dozens of options. A good progression is Python basics, data structures, file handling, and then a project such as analyzing a dataset. After that, add SQL and learn how to query and organize data.
