What’s the Best Way to Connect My PC and Xbox with One Ethernet Cable?

I have a gaming setup that includes both a computer and an Xbox, but I'm stuck with just one Ethernet cable running to the area, and all the ports on my router are occupied. I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect both devices. I've heard that using a splitter or a switch might be the solutions, but I'm concerned about speed. If I use a splitter, will it slow down my connection to both devices if I'm only using one at a time? Thanks for any advice!

You'll definitely want to go for a switch over a splitter. Splitting can lead to a ton of problems. A switch is fairly inexpensive and provides better performance since it can handle multiple devices properly without speed loss. It's a solid choice for your setup.

I'd recommend a simple unmanaged switch; it’ll do wonders for your setup! Splitting the cable can cause issues if you’re trying to use the devices at the same time. Just avoid any physical splitters—they tend to be problematic.

A cheap gigabit switch is your best bet. Just connect it to your router and then run cables to both your PC and Xbox from there. You’ll have plenty of bandwidth for both without any lag.

An Ethernet switch is the way to expand your connections. Splitting can be confusing because some people mislabel switches or use actual splitters which aren't reliable. Just stick with a switch; it's designed to handle multiple connections and keeps everything running smoothly.

Gigabit switches are cheap nowadays, costing less than $25. You’ll get better speeds and avoid any interference that you might encounter with a splitter. Trust me, go for a switch!
