My laptop runs Windows 11 and Microsoft's Find My Device feature is enabled. I'm mainly interested in recovering the physical laptop if it's stolen, rather than just protecting the files. How effective is Find My Device, and are there any additional tracking options worth setting up in advance?

Find My Device can show the laptop’s last known location and may let you lock it, but it only works while the device is powered on, connected to the internet, signed into the relevant Microsoft account, and still running the original installation. It isn’t a dedicated theft-recovery system, so don’t count on it if the thief wipes the drive or keeps the laptop offline.
A thief can often erase the drive and reinstall Windows, which removes software-based tracking. A small Bluetooth tracker, such as an AirTag-compatible or Android-compatible tag, hidden inside the laptop or case can improve the odds of locating it. Keep in mind that these tags depend on nearby devices and may notify the person carrying them.
You can also set a firmware password and enable device encryption. That won’t reliably stop someone from replacing the drive or motherboard, but it can make casual tampering harder and protects the data. Check your Microsoft account’s device list now to confirm the laptop is registered and that location services are enabled.
