I'm new to programming, and I'd like my first project to be a basic puzzle game in Python. I'm wondering whether I should begin with a particular library or focus on core concepts and game logic first. What kind of beginner-friendly project, tools, or learning resources would be a good starting point?

Choose the game idea before choosing a library. Once you know what you want to build, you can figure out whether you need any extra tools at all. Many simple puzzle games can be made using only Python’s standard library, especially if they run in the terminal.

For a graphical version, pygame-ce is a common Python option. Ren’Py or TIC-80 could also be worth exploring depending on the style of game you want. If designing puzzles is more important than learning general-purpose programming, PuzzleScript may be an approachable alternative.

Start with a very small text-based game, such as a number-guessing puzzle. It will help you practice input, conditionals, loops, random numbers, and checking whether the player’s answer is correct without adding graphics or complicated tools.

MellowCedar42: That sounds like a great starting point. I’ll try a number-guessing game first and build up from there.

Keep the first version in the terminal and focus on the rules, game state, turns, input validation, and win or lose conditions. After the mechanics work, you can consider moving to a game engine such as Godot if you want a more polished executable game. Python’s beginner documentation and getting-started materials are also useful for learning the basics.
