What’s the Best Way to Teach an 11-Year-Old Programming?

I'm a programmer and want to teach my 11-year-old brother the basics of programming and computer science. He spends a lot of time playing games on his iPad, but he's also interested in learning—especially after getting a Makeblock robot that can be controlled with block-based code. So far, I've ended up doing most of the programming for the robot myself. Should I start him with visual block programming, move straight to Python, or use another approach?

A gradual route makes sense: begin with blocks if they help him understand sequences, loops, conditions, and variables, then transition to Python once he wants more control. Don’t worry about avoiding one particular beginner tool—the best choice is whichever lets him build something he finds exciting.

The specific language matters less than helping him learn how to break problems into clear, manageable steps. Block programming can be a great introduction, but the most important thing is keeping the projects interesting and letting him solve problems himself instead of turning it into another school assignment.

Python is also a good option if he’s eager to type real code. A beginner-friendly, kid-oriented book such as Al Sweigart’s Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python can teach the basics through small games and provide a clear path for learning.

Try starting with projects connected to things he already enjoys, such as controlling the robot, making a small game, or experimenting with game creation tools. Visual programming and game makers can make the results feel immediate and creative, which is often more motivating than beginning with a text-based calculator.
