What’s the best way to upgrade my AM4 PC for 1440p gaming?

I built my current PC around 2020 and I'm starting to play more demanding games. Expedition 33, Hellblade 2, and FBC: Firebreak have exposed the limits of my system, with low frame rates and noticeably jagged visuals at 1440p.

My current parts are:

- MSI B450 Tomahawk Max motherboard
- AMD Ryzen 5 1600
- XFX Radeon RX 480 8GB
- Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650W fully modular PSU
- 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM
- Two SSDs and an unused NVMe drive
- Fractal Design case with front and top mesh panels

I'd like to improve performance without replacing everything if possible. I've heard that updating the BIOS and installing an AM4 Ryzen 5000 X3D processor—such as the 5500X3D, 5600X3D, or 5700X3D—could extend the life of my motherboard, and that I wouldn't need new RAM. However, some people have suggested moving to a B550 board, which sounds more like a full rebuild.

For the graphics card, I've seen an ASUS Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12GB listed for about $499, though I'm not sure whether a standard RX 9070 or 9070 XT would be a better choice. I'd prefer not to travel several hours to buy a discounted processor, especially after recently being involved in a freeway accident, so I'm also looking for comparable options available online.

My upgrade budget is around $1,000, possibly a little more for a particularly good deal. What would be a sensible upgrade path for 1440p gaming? Should I keep the B450 platform and upgrade the CPU and GPU, replace the motherboard, or look for a new prebuilt instead?

You can keep the B450 motherboard and existing DDR4 memory. First update the BIOS while the Ryzen 5 1600 is still installed, since the board may not boot with a newer CPU until the BIOS has been updated. After that, look for a Ryzen 5000 X3D chip such as the 5500X3D, 5600X3D, or 5700X3D. Even a regular Ryzen 5 5600X would be a huge improvement over the 1600, but an X3D model would pair better with a powerful modern graphics card and give the system more longevity.

For the GPU, the RX 9070 or 9070 XT would be stronger choices than the 9070 GRE if pricing is close. The standard RX 9070 also has 16GB of VRAM and uses less power than the XT, making it a particularly good match for the existing 650W power supply. A CPU and GPU upgrade on the current platform should be far less expensive than rebuilding the entire system.

I wouldn’t move to B550 just for this upgrade. Your B450 board already supports the useful AM4 processors once its BIOS is updated, and changing the motherboard would not require new RAM by itself anyway—you’d still be using DDR4. Put the money toward the CPU and graphics card instead. If you choose a high-power GPU such as an RX 9070 XT, check its recommended power supply carefully; the existing 650W unit may be fine for some models, but a PSU upgrade could be wise depending on the card’s requirements.

The Ryzen 5 5600X3D is also available online if you’re willing to pay a bit more than the local discounted price. That would avoid a long drive and still give you a strong gaming upgrade. Pair it with a suitable RX 9070-series card, and you could stay close to the $1,000 budget.

Your current 16GB of DDR4-3200 RAM should work, so there’s no immediate need to replace it. The unused NVMe drive can also be installed later for a clean Windows installation or additional game storage.
