What’s the best way to upgrade this AM4 gaming PC for $500?

My current PC is about three years old and was originally built for Twitch streaming. I mainly play multiplayer games such as League of Legends, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch, but I'd also like to play newer single-player titles such as Black Myth: Wukong. I use the system for browsing and watching videos as well.

I'm comfortable replacing components or building a PC, but I'm less familiar with choosing upgrades for the best performance. I'd like to remain on AM4 and spend up to $500 USD, assuming new parts for budgeting purposes, although used hardware is an option. My goal is a smooth 1440p experience at 100 FPS or more when practical. I'm also open to improving cooling or other supporting components if that would help performance or longevity, since I live in Australia. Storage upgrades can be ignored for now.

My hardware is a Ryzen 9 3900XT, Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti AORUS Master, Gigabyte B550 AORUS Pro AX motherboard, 64GB of DDR4-3600 memory, two NVMe SSDs, a Corsair H100i RGB Platinum AIO, a Meshify C case, several 120mm fans, and an 850W Gold-rated power supply. My monitor is a 27-inch 1440p 280Hz OLED display.

Is the system already suitable for my goals, or should I prioritize a CPU, GPU, or another component? I'd also appreciate general optimization advice if an upgrade isn't necessary.

The PC is still quite capable, so there isn’t an urgent upgrade. For newer and more demanding 1440p games, the graphics card is the main limitation. A GPU upgrade will usually provide a larger visible improvement than replacing the 3900XT, especially if you’re targeting high refresh rates. Selling the current GPU and adding that money to the budget would open up much better options.

The most effective plan would be to sell the 3900XT and RTX 3060 Ti, then combine that money with your $500 budget. With a larger budget, you could pair a 5700X3D or 5800X3D with a substantially faster modern graphics card. The exact card depends on local Australian pricing, but a high-end 1440p GPU would be a much better fit for the 280Hz OLED than the 3060 Ti.

If you want to stay on AM4, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the strongest straightforward gaming upgrade, provided you can find it at a reasonable price. At around $350 it can be poor value, though, so a discounted 5600X3D or 5700X3D may make more sense. The 3900XT is already strong for general use, and the CPU upgrade matters most in games where you’re CPU-limited.

The 5800X3D is worth considering only at a good sale price. Otherwise, putting more of the budget toward the graphics card is likely to help more at 1440p.

Don’t sell parts or change platforms unless you’re actually unhappy with the current performance. Your motherboard, 64GB of RAM, cooler, and power supply are all adequate. Check temperatures, enable XMP/DOCP for the memory, update drivers, and use sensible game settings or upscaling where available. Even with a major upgrade, maintaining 100 FPS in every demanding single-player game at 1440p isn’t realistic without reducing some settings.
