I've tried several Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora KDE, and Zorin, and I'd really like to use Linux on my ThinkPad. The problem is that many of the applications I rely on are Windows-only, and I'm concerned about losing Lenovo-specific utilities and my OEM Dolby Atmos license if I switch completely. Wine might work for some programs, but probably not everything.
I attempted a dual-boot setup on another computer before, but it caused serious boot-order problems and I eventually felt like reinstalling Windows was the easiest fix. It may have been user error, but I'm hesitant to repeat it. Installing a second NVMe drive would be ideal, though storage prices where I live are currently outside my budget. What would be the safest and most practical approach?

The most practical option is probably dual-booting on the existing drive. Before changing partitions, make a complete backup of your Windows installation and create a Windows installer or recovery drive. Shrink the Windows partition from inside Windows, boot a Linux live USB to check hardware compatibility, and then install Linux into the unallocated space. If the boot menu changes, you can usually adjust the default order in UEFI/BIOS.
You may not need every Lenovo utility on Linux. On some Lenovo gaming and performance laptops, hardware controls such as keyboard shortcuts, fan profiles, and power settings can work through Linux tools even without the manufacturer’s Windows application. It’s worth checking support for your exact ThinkPad model before deciding that you must preserve the entire Windows software stack.
First make a list of the applications you genuinely need. Many everyday programs have good Linux replacements, but some specialized Windows software still works best in Windows. Tools such as FSearch can cover the basic use case of Everything, and archive managers can handle ZIP and 7z files, though replacements may not match every feature. If only a few programs are Windows-only, dual-booting or keeping a small Windows virtual machine may be enough.
A virtual machine is worth considering if you only need Linux for experimenting or development while keeping Windows as your main system. It’s easy to remove and doesn’t alter the bootloader, but it won’t solve Windows crashes or update interruptions, and performance can be noticeably worse than running Linux directly.
