Intune policy changes often take an unpredictable amount of time to reach devices. The sync options in the management portal and on the device report that they ran, but the updated settings still may not apply immediately. Is there a reliable way to force an on-demand policy refresh across devices, similar to running gpupdate for Group Policy?

For an easier manual trigger, deploy the Company Portal to the relevant devices. Its Sync option usually starts a check-in right away. You can also sync from Windows under Accounts > Access work or school > your organization > Info. A restart may also trigger another check-in.
There isn’t a true synchronous gpupdate equivalent. The sync command mainly asks the device to check in, while policy processing and application still happen asynchronously. On an internet-connected device, a portal- or Company Portal-initiated sync should start the process, but it may not apply instantly. The newer sync-status view can help show whether the device was notified and which apps or policies actually completed.
