I'm currently running an Intel i7-10700K with a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, and the processor seems to be holding the system back in CPU-heavy games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, and Wardogs. At medium-to-low settings, I usually see around 60–120 FPS. Frame generation increases the average considerably, but the added input latency makes it less appealing for competitive shooters.
My monitor is 1440p at 160 Hz, so I'd ideally like much higher native FPS while keeping the image quality high. CPU and RAM prices are expensive at the moment, though, so I'm looking for the most cost-effective upgrade path. Is moving to AM5 worthwhile, or would another platform let me reuse more of my existing hardware and offer better value?

The value options are probably a used AM4 X3D setup or an LGA1700 upgrade. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D, if you can find one at a good price along with a compatible board, can provide a substantial gaming improvement while keeping the overall cost down. It also makes sense if you plan to keep the system for a few years and upgrade platforms later.
If you specifically want AM5, compare the total cost of the CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory rather than just the processor price. Entry-level AM5 can be a good long-term platform, but it won’t usually be the cheapest immediate upgrade because you need new RAM as well. A reasonably priced processor, board, and memory bundle can make the move much more attractive.
There may not be a perfect budget answer right now. DDR5 and newer platform prices make AM5 more expensive up front, while your existing DDR4 gives LGA1700 or a used AM4 build a financial advantage. If your current games are consistently CPU-bound at 60–120 FPS, upgrading the platform is justified, but compare complete build costs and game-specific benchmarks before buying.
There isn’t a meaningful way to improve the 10700K without changing the platform. Before choosing parts, set a firm budget. If you want to avoid buying DDR5, an LGA1700 motherboard with a 12th-, 13th-, or 14th-generation Core i5 or i7 could be a cheaper route because you may be able to reuse your DDR4. For 13th- or 14th-generation chips, make sure the motherboard BIOS is current.

Online games can be much more CPU-limited than typical single-player games, especially with a high-end card like the 5070 Ti. Don’t assume an entry-level AM5 processor will always be enough for 160 Hz gaming; check benchmarks for the exact games you play.
