What’s the most cost-effective way to make my 5800X3D system quieter?

My PC uses a Ryzen 7 5800X3D cooled by a Thermalright Peerless Assassin with its included fans, along with a Radeon RX 9070. The case is a Cooler Master MasterCase H500 with a mesh front, two large 200 mm intake fans, and one 120 mm rear exhaust fan. Cable management is tidy and I clean out the dust regularly.

The main problem is the CPU cooler noise. Whenever the system compiles shaders, installs software, or runs a CPU-heavy game, the cooler ramps up and sounds like a jet engine. Temperatures are technically within acceptable limits for the 5800X3D, but the noise is extremely noticeable. I've tried reducing the fan curve, but temperatures climb and the fans become loud and inconsistent anyway.

Would replacing the Peerless Assassin fans with quieter models be the best value? I've also considered changing the case fans to four 120 mm models, replacing the cooler entirely, or installing an AIO. I'm inexperienced with liquid cooling and would prefer to avoid leak or reliability concerns if it wouldn't make a major difference. What would you recommend as the most effective way to reduce the noise without spending unnecessarily?

Start with undervolting the 5800X3D. Curve Optimizer can reduce the CPU’s power consumption and temperature substantially, which gives you room to run a quieter fan curve. Many 5800X3D systems can use a negative offset, although the stable value varies by chip. Test it gradually and back off if you encounter crashes or freezes. You can also lower the power limit slightly without a meaningful gaming performance loss.

If you want to experiment without buying anything, try a negative Curve Optimizer setting and cap the cooler fans around 1,500 RPM, then check temperatures and stability with sustained workloads. The 5800X3D often responds very well to this combination, and it can maintain boost clocks while producing less heat and noise.

The included Peerless Assassin fans are functional, but their noise profile isn’t great at high RPM. Replacing them with Arctic P12s, Phanteks T30s, be quiet! Silent Wings, or similar quality fans can make a noticeable difference while keeping the same heatsink. The temperature change should be small, and a three-pack could also replace the rear case fan.

Your fan curve may simply be too aggressive. Since the temperatures are safe, let the CPU run warmer before increasing fan speed—for example, keep the fans around 25–30% through the lower temperature range, avoid going above roughly 50% until around 60°C, and reserve maximum speed for much higher temperatures. Adding a little ramp delay can also prevent constant up-and-down revving. The large front fans already provide plenty of airflow, so changing all the case fans probably won’t help as much as tuning the CPU fans.

An AIO is a sealed, maintenance-free loop, so it normally doesn’t need refilling. However, it isn’t automatically quieter: the pump adds another sound source, and radiator fans can still become loud under load. A quality air cooler with better fans and a sensible curve is likely the safer and cheaper choice for this processor. A larger, low-RPM cooler such as a Scythe or Noctua model is another option if you want lower noise more than maximum cooling performance.

The big 200 mm intake fans should already be quiet at their low operating speed. I’d focus on the CPU fan replacement and undervolting before changing the case airflow setup.
