I currently have an Intel i5-12400 and am considering upgrading to a 13th- or 14th-generation i5. I'm new to building PCs, so I'm wondering whether replacing a CPU is as straightforward as replacing a graphics card. Do I need to use Safe Mode, uninstall anything, or perform steps similar to using DDU for a GPU upgrade? Should I update the BIOS or reinstall Windows, or can I simply remove the old processor and install the new one?

Before buying, make sure the upgrade is worthwhile. An i5-13400 or i5-14600K may not provide a dramatic improvement over an i5-12400, depending on your workload and graphics card. The 12400 is still capable, so identify what performance problem you’re trying to solve and compare the expected gains with the cost. Also check whether your motherboard and cooler can handle the newer chip, especially a higher-power K-series model.
First check your motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements. A 600-series board may need a BIOS update before it can recognize a 13th- or 14th-generation processor. If an update is required, do it while the i5-12400 is still installed and follow the motherboard manufacturer’s instructions. After installing the new CPU, you may need to re-enable settings such as XMP and check your fan curves. You normally do not need Safe Mode, DDU, or a Windows reinstall for a CPU swap.
The physical swap is fairly simple, but be careful with the LGA socket pins. Turn off and unplug the PC, remove the cooler, clean off the old thermal paste, release the socket latch, and lift the CPU out by its edges. Install the replacement in the correct orientation, apply fresh thermal paste, reinstall the cooler evenly, and reconnect everything. Resetting the BIOS is not always necessary, but clearing it can help if the system fails to boot after the change.
The biggest hardware risk is bending the motherboard’s socket pins, so avoid touching the contacts and don’t force the processor into place.
