What’s the safest way to move everything from my old laptop to a new one?

I just bought a newer, more powerful laptop and want to move my files, folders, photos, and other important data from the old computer. What's the easiest and safest method to transfer everything while keeping the original laptop intact as a backup? I'd also like to know whether programs and games can be transferred or if they need to be installed again.

Cloud storage such as Google Drive or OneDrive can work well: sync the files from the old laptop, sign in on the new one, and let them download. This gives you an off-site copy as protection against theft, fire, or hardware failure. Just be cautious with highly sensitive financial documents, and remember that most applications will still need to be installed again and configured. Some games can be restored through their launchers, but local saves may need to be copied separately.

I’ll use cloud storage as a backup and check the game-save locations separately. I understand now that transferring files won’t automatically move all of my installed programs.

For a straightforward transfer, copy your important folders—Documents, Pictures, Videos, Desktop, Downloads, and any game-save folders—to an external SSD, then copy them onto the new laptop. Keep the old laptop untouched until you’ve checked that everything transferred correctly. An SSD is preferable to a cheap mechanical external drive because it’s faster and less vulnerable to damage from being bumped.

That makes sense. I’ll use cloud storage for an additional backup, but I’ll probably use an external SSD for the actual transfer so I don’t have to download everything.

You can also connect the two laptops over your home network and copy the files through a shared folder, but that can be slower and more complicated than using an external SSD. A special transfer cable usually isn’t necessary. Whichever method you choose, make a backup first, transfer the files, verify them on the new computer, and only then consider wiping or retiring the old laptop.
