I'm comfortable building computers, but I haven't upgraded memory in years and want to avoid compatibility problems. My system has 64GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 and uses an MSI B550 Tomahawk motherboard with a Ryzen 9 5950X. I'd like to reach the board's 128GB maximum by adding another 64GB.

Do the new modules need to be the exact same sticks, or is matching the brand, capacity, speed, and timings enough? What usually happens when memory isn't compatible—will the system simply fail to boot, or can it run unreliably? The machine is a Debian server running many Docker containers, with occasional build workloads, so stability matters more than gaming performance.

If the kits don’t cooperate, the symptoms can range from failing to boot or repeated memory training to crashes and intermittent data corruption. Different timings generally don’t mean the sticks are automatically unusable: the motherboard can run them all at common, more conservative settings, usually based on the slowest module.
