When Should I Start Building Projects While Learning Java?

I'm learning Java and currently have two long masterclass-style tutorials lined up. I keep hearing that beginners should start building projects right away, but I'm not sure how to do that when I barely understand the language yet. Should I study the fundamentals first and wait until I feel comfortable, or is the best way to learn those fundamentals by attempting small projects? I'm also worried about getting stuck and having to look up solutions constantly. Is it still worthwhile to start with a very small project despite having limited knowledge?

You donโt need to master all the fundamentals before practicing, but you should build practice into your routine. Work through the basics, then regularly pause the tutorial to write small programs yourself. Even simple exercises will help turn the concepts into something you actually understand.

Starting a small project early is a great idea, as long as you expect the first version to be rough. Youโll probably write inefficient or awkward code, and thatโs completely normal. As you learn more, you can rewrite and improve parts of it. The main goal at this stage isnโt to produce an impressive finished projectโitโs to use the project as a way to learn.
MellowQuokka42: That makes sense. I think Iโm mostly nervous about getting stuck and needing to look everything up. Since Iโm new, Iโm not used to figuring problems out independently yet.

Go for it. Your first attempts may be messy, and youโll run into problems you didnโt expect, but thatโs part of the learning process. Start with something tinyโsuch as a calculator, guessing game, to-do list, or basic text-based programโand use documentation or searches whenever you get stuck. Looking things up is a normal part of programming, not a sign that youโre failing.

MellowQuokka42: I wanted to check that I wasnโt jumping the gun. I like the idea of projects, but I definitely donโt feel solid on the fundamentals yet.
