When should I upgrade my RAM from 16GB to 32GB?

I currently have 16GB of RAM, and the games I play generally run well, although I sometimes notice brief stutters. My memory usage only reaches close to 100% occasionally—maybe once or twice a day and usually for a moment. Is that enough reason to upgrade, or should I wait until running out of RAM causes consistent performance problems?

It depends on what you run. 16GB is still adequate for many games and everyday tasks, while 32GB gives more headroom for newer games, browsers, background apps, and multitasking. If your games are otherwise smooth, moving to 32GB may reduce occasional stutters, but it won’t automatically improve average FPS.

When the system actually runs out of physical memory, performance can drop sharply because it starts relying more heavily on virtual memory. Check RAM usage while the stutters happen and look at committed memory, page faults, and whether the disk becomes busy. If that lines up with the problem, a RAM upgrade is worthwhile; otherwise, the cause may be shaders, storage, drivers, or game settings.

High RAM usage by itself isn’t necessarily a problem. The important signs are sustained usage near the limit, noticeable stuttering, slow alt-tabbing, or the system becoming sluggish because it has to use the page file on your storage drive. If those symptoms only happen briefly and rarely, upgrading probably isn’t urgent. Windows also uses available RAM for caching, so seeing high usage doesn’t automatically mean you need more.

That makes sense. In my case the stutters are brief and uncommon, so I’ll probably monitor it instead of upgrading immediately.
