I'm currently in school, but my laptop suddenly stopped working and I can't afford to replace it right now. What are some good ways to find a working older laptop from someone who no longer needs it, preferably for free or at a very low cost?

Post a short “wanted” notice explaining that you’re a student looking for a functional laptop. Try neighborhood groups, community bulletin boards, and local classified sections. Someone nearby may have an unused computer they’d be happy to pass along.
Look through the free and computer sections of local classified websites. You can also check secondhand stores, school support programs, libraries, and community nonprofits, since some refurbish donated laptops and provide them to students at little or no cost.
Auction and resale sites are another option, but be careful to compare the total price and check the seller’s ratings. For an older laptop, make sure it can run the software you need and ask about battery condition, charging equipment, and whether it has been reset.
Check local online marketplaces and classified listings. People who have upgraded sometimes sell older laptops cheaply, and some are willing to give them away if they’re just trying to clear out space.

Neighborhood groups can be especially helpful. People are often more comfortable giving an older device to someone local, particularly when they know it’s needed for school.
