I've seen websites in the United States that offer free laptops to students, but I haven't found anything similar in Denmark or elsewhere in the EU. Are there any legitimate programs, school loans, or financial assistance options I should look into?

A refurbished or second-hand laptop could be a practical option. For normal schoolwork, you probably don’t need a powerful machine, and a model that’s a few years old can cost much less. Also ask whether the school can lend you one, and check who is responsible for damage or loss—insurance may matter.
If your education qualifies for SU, you may be able to use the regular support—or potentially an SU loan—to cover study expenses. There usually isn’t a separate nationwide SU grant specifically for laptops. Your kommune may also help with necessary one-time costs in certain financial circumstances, but that depends on your income, age, benefits, and individual situation.
Be careful with websites promising completely free laptops. Many are scams. If you have a disability or condition that makes studying more difficult, SPS may be able to provide compensating technology or software. It’s support based on documented needs, not simply on being unable to afford a computer.
Start by asking your school office or municipality. Some schools and local programs lend laptops or Chromebooks to students, especially in folkeskole, FGU, and certain vocational or youth education programs. Availability depends on the area, so the school is the best first contact.
