I'm looking for a legitimate way to verify my student status and get a free domain, ideally for at least a year, without having to use GitHub or a GitHub-related student offer. I found a provider that offered something similar several months ago, but I can't remember its name. Does anyone know of good options?

If you only need a site address for a portfolio or project, Cloudflare Pages or Workers can work well. Their service-provided domains are free and generally don’t expire like a one-year promotional domain might.
Cloudflare has some free options for students and developers, although they may not provide a traditional custom domain. Cloudflare Pages gives you a free address ending in pages.dev, while Workers can provide a workers.dev address.
Those Cloudflare addresses are useful for hosting projects, but they aren’t the same as registering your own .com or other standard domain.
