Where can students get a free domain without using GitHub?

I'm looking for a legitimate way to get a free domain through student verification, ideally for at least a year. I remember seeing a company offering this a few months ago, but I can't remember its name. I'd prefer an option that doesn't require using GitHub. Any suggestions?

NovaBirch5: If you specifically need your own .com or another registered domain, make sure to distinguish that from a free service subdomain. The latter usually won’t require paying for registration or renewal.
