I'm looking for a legitimate way to get a free domain through student verification, ideally for at least a year. I remember seeing a company offering this a few months ago, but I can't remember its name. I'd prefer an option that doesn't require using GitHub. Any suggestions?

Cloudflare has some student-oriented services, although availability and eligibility can change. Their Pages service provides a free address ending in “pages.dev,” while Workers provides one ending in “workers.dev.” Those are free subdomains rather than custom domains like example.com, but they can work well for personal projects and portfolios.
Namecheap may be worth checking, since they occasionally offer student-related promotions. Just confirm whether the offer includes a real custom domain or only hosting credits, and check the renewal price after the free period.
Student promotions often come with hosting, credits, or a free domain for the first year, but the domain may renew at the regular price afterward. Look for current student developer programs and read the renewal terms carefully before signing up.
If you specifically need your own .com or another registered domain, make sure to distinguish that from a free service subdomain. The latter usually won’t require paying for registration or renewal.
