I'm choosing between two custom PCs and would like to know which offers better value for my games. The first costs about $2,172 and includes an RX 9070, Core i7-14700K, 64GB of DDR4-3200 CL18, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a 750W power supply, an AIO cooler, case fans, and Windows 11. The second costs about $2,341 and includes an RX 9070 XT, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6400 CL32, a 1TB NVMe SSD, an 850W power supply, an AIO cooler, case fans, and Windows 11. Prices are in USD. I mainly play and host Icarus, Scrap Mechanic, and Minecraft Java/Bedrock, and I'd like to use high or maximum settings at 1440p on a 320Hz monitor. I'm coming from a laptop with an RTX 3050 6GB and 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory. I understand that 64GB may not be necessary, but these are the two configurations I'm comparing. I'm saving for another one or two years, so I'm mainly interested in which option is the better choice rather than general advice about future-proofing.

The first system sounds badly priced for a DDR4 platform. If you’re spending over $2,000, I’d want the faster graphics card and DDR5 platform rather than paying extra for 64GB that you probably won’t use. It may also be worth checking other part combinations, because a 7800X3D/9070 XT system can often be built for less depending on the motherboard, cooler, and Windows license.
Between these exact options, I’d choose the 9070 XT and Ryzen 7 7800X3D build. The XT is roughly 10–15% faster than the regular 9070, the 7800X3D is excellent for gaming, and you get DDR5 plus a larger power supply for only about $169 more. 32GB is already enough for nearly all games, including most Minecraft setups. Just make sure the 850W unit is a reputable model, since power-supply quality matters more than the wattage number.
The 9070 XT and X3D chip are the better gaming combination, especially for CPU-heavy games and busy Minecraft worlds. However, don’t assume every game will run at 320 FPS on maximum settings. Modded Minecraft, shaders, large automated builds, and poorly optimized modpacks can be limited by the game or modpack rather than the hardware. At 1440p, the graphics card will usually be the main limit in demanding games.
One important issue is timing: if you won’t buy for another one or two years, today’s prices and parts won’t be a reliable guide. New CPU and GPU generations could change the value completely. If you had to buy one of these now, pick the 9070 XT/7800X3D build without much hesitation, but compare current prices again when you’re actually ready to purchase.
