Which Career Path Leads More Directly to DevOps: Full-Stack Development or SDET?

It really depends on the day-to-day work rather than the job title. The full-stack role could be the better choice if you’ll work with Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, monitoring, or production deployments. On the other hand, a development position focused only on application features may provide little infrastructure experience. Ask both companies which tools you’ll use and how much access you’ll have to deployment and operations work.

The SDET role may be the more direct path if it involves building test infrastructure, maintaining CI pipelines, automating deployments, and validating releases. Those responsibilities overlap with several core DevOps practices, especially in a networking and security environment.

Neither position automatically leads to DevOps. DevOps is a broad area involving software delivery, infrastructure, automation, reliability, and operations. The best option is the one that lets you take ownership of build pipelines, environments, releases, observability, and cloud or systems work—not simply the role with the more promising title.
