I'm a computer science graduate, but I feel that my resume could use a few relevant certifications. I'm willing to set aside time to study, and my main goal is to build and deploy applications end to end. My recent experience has involved applications that integrate large language models and AI agents.
I've been considering the AWS Certified AI Practitioner and CompTIA Security+ to strengthen my understanding of AI tools and application security. I'm also interested in something related to system design, cloud development, or software engineering best practices.
Which certifications would be genuinely useful for an aspiring software developer or engineer in 2026? I'd especially appreciate recommendations that are free or affordable, along with insight into which certifications have actually helped people get interviews or jobs. I'm also open to advice about projects or other ways to demonstrate these skills.

For software engineering jobs, a strong project portfolio often carries more weight than a long list of certificates. Build and deploy a complete application, document the architecture and tradeoffs, and show how you handled testing, security, version control, monitoring, and deployment. A project using Python, AI services, or Git in a meaningful way can demonstrate more than simply passing an exam. The AWS AI Practitioner could be useful as an introductory credential, but employers will care more about what you can actually build with AI.
Free documentation, structured online courses, and open-source contributions can be excellent alternatives to expensive certifications. Use them to develop concrete skills, then publish a few polished projects with clear READMEs, architecture diagrams, and deployment instructions. That gives employers evidence of your abilities while you decide which certification, if any, best fits your target role.
Start with the type of job you want rather than collecting certifications at random. Decide whether you’re targeting backend development, cloud application development, AI engineering, security, or another specific path, then choose training that supports that goal. A certification is most useful when it matches the technologies and responsibilities listed in the jobs you’re applying for.
Certifications aren’t something to collect just for the sake of filling out a resume. Pick one that aligns with the roles you actually want and use the material to build something practical. For an end-to-end cloud application, a developer-focused certification such as Azure AZ-204 could be relevant because it covers building and deploying applications in Azure, along with useful cloud design concepts. AWS and Google Cloud offer comparable developer certifications.

That’s helpful. I’m looking into the AZ-204 material now and comparing it with the equivalent AWS options.
