Which CPU is better for gaming: the Core i9-11900K or Core i7-12700?

I'm choosing between an Intel Core i9-11900K and Core i7-12700 for a gaming PC. A benchmark comparison claims the i7-12700 is only about 4% faster, even though its listed base clock is lower. The i7 also seems marketed more toward workstation use, so I'm wondering how they actually compare in games. Are there other factors I should consider before buying, such as power use, heat, platform compatibility, or newer alternatives?

The Core i7-12700 is generally the much better gaming CPU. Alder Lake brought a major performance improvement over 11th gen, and the 12700 combines newer architecture with additional efficiency cores. Donโ€™t put much weight on UserBenchmark comparisons; its CPU rankings and reviews are widely considered unreliable.

If youโ€™re buying new rather than upgrading an existing compatible system, Iโ€™d also check newer options such as the i5-13600KF or i5-14600KF. They can offer better gaming performance for the money. That said, the 12700 is still perfectly capable, and owners report it handling modern games well with a decent cooler.

Your games and graphics card matter too. The 11900K uses more power and can run hotter, so compare actual gaming benchmarks for the titles you play rather than relying on a single aggregate score. Also remember that these chips use different sockets, so neither is a simple drop-in replacement for the other.

Base clock isnโ€™t a useful way to compare these processors. The sustained boost clock, architecture, cache, core layout, and cooling matter more. In most games, the 12700 will be faster and more efficient. The 11900K might only pull ahead in a narrow, memory-latency-sensitive scenario with a good overclock.

MellowPine47: That clears up why the lower base clock doesnโ€™t necessarily mean worse gaming performance. Iโ€™ll focus on real game benchmarks instead.
